Toe Fungus, Is Unsightly
Got Aggravating Toe Fungus?

Toe Fungus is unsightly, it's aggravating, and it's persistent. Toe fungus, also known as onychomycosis or ringworm of the nail, is a parasitic infection in the nails of the fingers or toes.

Most often, a toe nail fungal infection involves a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which include Trichophyton  rubrum, and Trichophyton  mentagrophytes. They thrive on keratin the protein in the nail.

But a toe fungus may also thrive on yeast mold, or even the acrylic nail bonding agent methyl methacrylate which may be used by discounts salons instead of the safer ethyl methacrylate. Toenails are more likely to be infected than fingernails. The big toe and little toes have the highest risk, probably because they are exposed to the most friction from shoes.

Toe fungus is a relatively common problem. Though many people are unaware of their condition, it has been estimated at 12 million Americans have this disorder. Men are twice as likely as women to have a nail fungus, and the incidence appears to increase with age.

Toe Fungus Causes

A  Toe fungal infection usually occurs when a nail is damaged or exposed over an extended period of time to a warm, moist environment. People who spend a good deal of time working with water, such as dishwashers and cleaning personal, are at increased risk.

Those with diabetes or HIV are also at greater risk, as are those who tend to perspire a lot from their feet and/or have a history of athlete's foot. Other factors that add to the risk include poor circulation and hot, humid weather.

Signs And Symptoms

Toe fungus usually begins with a small separation between the end of the nail the skin  under the nail. With time, a yellow material forms in this separation, and the nail becomes  thick and yellow or brown. There may be white spots on the nail, and not good smelling  debris under the nail. Unless the area becomes infected or is so thick that it presses against the inside of your shoes, there should be little or no pain.

When a nail is infected, there may be a good deal of pain, and you may find it uncomfortable to walk or stand. However, in time, the nail separates, and you are left with a moderately destroyed yellow nail that may fall off. Even if the nail falls off, the new nail will grow in with the fungus.

Conventional Treatment

Unfortunately, without treatment, toe fungus persists. So, unless you are content to watch your nails deteriorate, see a doctor. Your treatment may begin with your Doctor attempting to remove as much of the affected nail as  possible. This may involve trimming the nail with clipper, filing it down, or dissolving it with a paste that contains urea and bifonazole.

If the affected areas relatively small, your Doctor may prescribed medicated nail polish that contains cicloppirox (loproz). This should be applied to the nail daily until the fungus is completely gone. This treatment is more effective than placebo and appears to be safe. It may be useful for people who are unable to take oral anti fungal drugs. Studies are needed to  demonstrate how long the nail will remain free of the fungus.

after many visits, and if the nail fungus does not respond to treatment and is causing you pain, you Doctor may need to permanently removal  the infected nail. OUCH

Preventive measures

Get treatment for athlete's foot. Be certain it is treated adequately. The fungus causing athlete's foot can cause a toenail infection, which  is much more difficult to eradicate.

Care for your nails. Keep your nails short, dry, and clean. After bathing or showering, dry your toes and the area between your toes.

Change your socks. If you feet tend to swell, sweat, change socks several times a day.

Don't pick at your nails. If you pick at your skin near the nail, you can create an entry point for fungi.

Use a foot powder. A good quality foot talcum ( not cornstarch) will absorbed excess perspiration.

Wear shoes, sandals, or flip-flops. Walking around in public pool, locker room, or shower without shoes places you at high risk for fungal infection. Also, wear comfortable shoes that have room for your feet to breathe.
